3 to 4 hour practical identification course

Spider and scorpion identification can be difficult to get to grips with, but it does not haver to be that way. 

This 3 to 4 hour course offers vital understanding for everyone who wishes to increase their spider and scorpion identification skills, which in turn will improve your first response for spider bites and scorpion stings. This course offers the most comprehensive identification guide available, by presenting an identification framework consisting on 4 key characteristics that can be applied to both spiders and scorpions. This framework of 4 characteristics greatly simplifies identification.

Suitable for over 13 years of age. The course includes the following:

  • In field lectures. 
  • a copy of the Spider & Scorpion Identification Guide.
  • Writing equipment.
  • Certificate.
  • Shared loupes are provided. If you have a loupe, please bring it along. Loupes are available for purchase on the day.

This short course is ideal for:

  • Field Guides.
  • Conservation students.
  • General public. 

The contents of this course are aligned to the Unit Standards as required by FGASA for the Apprentice Field Guide Qualification. This course provides the foundations for the Spider and Scorpion First Aid Course and Essential First Responder Seminars.

This course includes 84 page Spider & Scorpions Identification Guide, pen and certificate. Loupes will be available for use during the. Participants may bring their own loupe or purchase one for the course. All other training materials will be provided. 

Duration

The duration of this course is 3 to 4 hours depending upon requirements. For a 1 day event, combine this event with:

  • Essential Spider Bite First Responder
  • Essential Scorpion Sting First Responder
  • Spider and scorpion first aid course
  • Guided walk

Format

  • 2 to 4 hours in duration depending on the requirements.
  • This identification course is very practical, requiring a nature reserve or natural area. 
  • Maximum participants per session 20.
  • Minimum participants per session 8.
  • This event makes a great team building event.

  1. A great afternoon looking at various different spiders and scorpions, and learning how the different families relate to each other, how to predict where different species will occur based on habitat, and of course more specific identification skills.

Yesterday I had the privilege of attending a personal one on one Spider and Scorpion Identification Course presented by Jonathan Leeming wherein he increased my spider and scorpion identification skills tremendously, which in turn will improve my first response for spider bites and scorpion stings.
