Traditional Healers

Essential Scorpion Sting First Response by Jonathan Leeming

In Southern Africa, the occurrence of high risk species of scorpion, is closely aligned with rural areas that often have little or no medical facilities. In these areas, traditional healers are a culturally significant, trusted and much valued service within the community. In more affluent, urban areas, for example, homoeopathy and naturopathy plays a similar role in within those areas, serving a different kind of client.

They are often the first person that the patient will seek assistance from. They are available, often close at hand, well known in the community and are in a position to provide guidance to someone in need.

In partnership with SanParks, I've created some short 1 pagers for traditional healers, translated into various languages for maximal reach. These resources focus upon requirements of traditional healers. The important focus is when can a traditional healer supply services to the patient, and where is that magic line in the sand that once crossed, the patient should be redirected to the nearest clinic. The from a clinic point of view, where should the patient be redirected.

The following resources should be distributed to rural areas where traditional healers offer the most value. These resources are in A4 landscape format, double sided.

English

Afrikaans

Khosa

Zulu

These resources have been possible through a partnership between Jonathan Leeming and SanParks. Thank you to Dr Louise Swemmer for making these resources possible.
