The National Snakebite Advisory Group and Emergency Medicine Soceity of South Africa are hosting the South African Snakebite Symposium, held on the 22nd and 23rd November 2025 at Pretoria University. It will be a gathering of the top specialists in their fields, coming together to tackle the challenge of envenomation in Southern Africa.

My contribution to the symposium will be a 30 minute presentation entitled Scorpions and Scorpion Stings In Southern Africa.  The presentation content includes the following:

  • Overview of scorpions in Southern Africa.
  • Distributions.
  • General activity.
  • Venom and venomosity. 
  • High risk species.
  • High risk areas.
  • When do stings occur?
  • Classification of symptoms. 
  • Symptoms (localised and systemic).
  • Factors influencing symptoms severity.
  • Sting stings and what the statistics tell us.
  • Red flags.
  • Antivenom, a critical resource. 
  • Connecting the dots (classes, symptoms, venomosity, timeframes). 
  • Additional resources, medical references and more...

I'll also be presenting a poster entitled: Reducing the burden of scorpion stings in Southern Africa: a novel approach.
