Jonathan Leeming is the leading authority on spider bite and scorpion sting first response in Southern Africa. He consults for medical organisations such as the National Poison Information Helpline, as well as speaks and is a panel member at the Eswatini Snakebite Symposium, South African Snakebite Symposium. Jonathan is also a member of the National Snakebite Advisory Group. His work has shaped the way spider bites and scorpion stings are treated across southern African and beyond.
Venom day is something different. Highly interactive and participative, the idea behind Venom Day is simple. Participants submit their questions to Jonathan before the event (or I direct the conversation according to the current burning questions at that time).
Anything venomous animal related goes! How venom works, antivenom manufacture and use, current status of envenomation research in Southern Africa, new approaches to spider bites, scorpion stings, snakebites, centipede bites, jellyfish stings, sting ray stings. First response techniques and the best places to ask for advice. Participant are encouraged to ask questions and help direct the conversation.
After the event, Jonathan will email some links to further resources based upon the topics discussed during the session.
I'm on a mission to reduce the burden of spider bites and scorpion stings across Southern Africa!
